Yokozuna: Kakuryu was the only yokozuna to complete the January Basho, dropping four consecutive matches after a perfect 10-0 start to finish 11-4. Hakuho pulled out of the last basho after day four, finishing 2-3-10. Kisenosato pulled out after day five, finishing 1-5-9, and marking the fourth consecutive basho in which he has pulled out before the end of the first week, and the fifth consecutive basho he has failed to complete. The Yokozuna Deliberation Council has stated that it would “make a decision” regarding Kisenosato if he starts the basho, but fails to complete it.


Ozeki: Takayasu finished with a respectable 12-3 record in January after a poor start. Goeido finished 8-7 last time out.


Sekiwake: Mitakeumi finished with a disappointing 8-7 record in January, dropping five straight after starting 7-0. Tochinoshin makes the jump to sekiwake after claiming his first yusho with an impressive 14-1 January Basho.


Komusubi: Ichinojo entered the January Basho at a robust 215 kg (474 lbs), which seemed to have boosted his strength as he overpowered his opponents to a 10-5 record. Chiyotairyu finished 8-7 in January.


Maegashira 1: Endo finished 9-6 at Maegashira 5 last basho. Tamawashi falls to maegashira 1 after a 6-9 performance as a sekiwake in January.


Maegashira 2: Arawashi Makes the jump from maegashira 4, after an 8-7 record in January. Takarafuji has jumped four spots after going 8-7 in January.


Maegashira 3: Kotoshogiku will appear at his lowest rank since November 2010 after a 7-8 record in January. Takakeisho went 5-10 in January in his san’yaku debut as a komusubi.


Maegashira 4: Shohozan jumps up from maegashira 9 after a 9-6 in January. Shodai went 7-8 in January.


Maegashira 5: Chiyomaru finished the January basho 9-6 at maegashira 9. Onosho pulled out of the January basho, finishing 4-6-5, his first make-koshi in the makuuchi division.


Maegashira 6: Kaisei went 8-7 at maegashira 8 in January. Hokutofuji finished the January basho with a 4-11 record.


Maegashira 7: Abi went 10-5 in his makuuchi debut in January. Yoshikaze scored to kinboshi in January, but finished the basho 4-11.


Maegashira 8: Kagayaki finished the January basho 9-6. Daieisho also went 9-6 in January.


Maegashira 9: Okinoumi went 5-10 in January. Ryuden finished 10-5 in his makuuchi debut.


Maegashira 10: Chiyoshoma went 6-9 as a maegashira 7 in January. Chiyonokuni had an identical 6-9 record in January.


Maegashira 11: Tochiozan pulled out of the basho in January, finishing 6-6-3. Yutakayama finished the January basho with a 9-6 record.


Maegashira 12: Ishiura went 9-6 in January. Kotoyuki finished the January basho 7-8.


Maegashira 13: Daishomaru finished the basho 7-8 in January. Asanoyama went 9-6 in his third makuuchi basho in January.


Maegashira 14: Ikioi finished with a disappointing 4-11 in January. Nishikigi went 8-7 in January.


Maegashira 15: Sokokurai finished the January basho 6-9. Myogiryu won the juryo division with a 10-5 record in January.


Maegashira 16: Daiamami went 8-7 at maegashira 17 in January. Hidenoumi finished the January basho 10-5, but lost a playoff to Myogiryu.


Maegashira 17: Aoiyama went 9-6 in juryo in January.
